You probably don't need an explanation for why anyone builds a boat. In Racundra's First Cruise, Arthur Ransome says: &The desire to build a house is the tired wish of a man content thenceforward with a single anchorage. The desire to build a boat is the desire of youth, unwilling yet to accept the idea of a final resting place... the desire to build a boat is one of those that cannot be resisted. It begins as a little cloud on a serene horizon. It ends by covering the whole sky so that you can think of nothing else. You must build to regain your freedom.& If we didn't all feel somewhat this way, I doubt very many boats would be built.

One may build for many reasons: For the sheer enjoyment of it, to get a special boat which is unavailable as a stock type, to make a livelihood doing something worth-while, or (as is most often the case with the amateur) to save money.

A yacht is no longer just a status symbol. To many owners today, custom yachts are the ultimate creative endeavor. The design and building process results in something tangible that brings pleasure to those with a shared passion for the art form.

Every boat represents the vision of the owner, in effect a culmination of decisions each of which integrates variables that rage from personal preferences to cost.
